Red Dead Redemption 2 is a massive hit! It's now the fourth best-selling video game ever, with over 79 million copies sold since it came out in 2018.
Publisher Take-Two revealed this news, though it was a bit overshadowed by the announcement that Grand Theft Auto 6 (GTA 6) has been delayed until November 26, 2026.
Tucked away in an investor report, Take-Two said that the Red Dead franchise as a whole has sold over 106 million copies.
This means Red Dead Redemption 2 has outsold every other game released in the last seven years. That includes popular titles like Elden Ring, Monster Hunter: World, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. It's also sold more than The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, The Sims, and PUBG (though PUBG did become free-to-play later on).
Red Dead Redemption 2 even surpassed Mario Kart 8, which used to be the fourth best-selling game.
Only Minecraft, Grand Theft Auto 5 (GTA 5), and Wii Sports have sold more copies. They have sales of 350 million, 220 million, and 82.9 million, respectively.
In July, Rockstar surprisingly released an update for Red Dead Online. It included four new adventures: Strange Tales of The Plague, Strange Tales of Modern Science, Strange Tales of The Bayou, and Strange Tales of The Wilderness. This was unexpected since Rockstar had said in 2022 that there wouldn't be any more major updates for Red Dead Online.
