Bungie's new extraction shooter, Marathon, is still expected to launch by March 2026

Bungie's new extraction shooter, Marathon, is still expected to launch by March 2026. Sony's Chief Financial Officer, Lin Tao, confirmed this, adding that "corrections" will be made after recent playtests to ensure the game meets expectations.

Marathon was put on hold indefinitely last June. This delay followed strong feedback from players and a plagiarism issue involving an outside artist's work.

Despite these challenges, Tao stated in a recent financial report that Sony and Bungie are "fully dedicated to launching the title to schedule." She explained that a technical playtest in October helped gather data on gameplay and player retention. "We are now reviewing that performance," Tao noted, "and will make changes if needed." The planned March 2026 release is already part of Sony's financial outlook.

This strong commitment to Marathon is particularly important as Bungie, the game's developer, has recently faced performance issues with its other major title, Destiny 2. Sony recorded a financial loss related to Bungie, as Destiny 2's sales and player interest have not met targets since Bungie joined Sony. This background adds pressure for Marathon to succeed.

Separately, Sony also shared that the PlayStation 5 console has now shipped more than 84.2 million units. Another new game, Ghost of Yotei, sold over 3.3 million copies in its first month.
