Gears of War E-Day release date and latest news

What is the release date for Gears of War E-Day? The Coalition surprised everyone at the 2024 Xbox Games Showcase by announcing a prequel to one of gaming's most famous stories. Instead of the expected Gears 6, we're going back to the beginning for Marcus Fenix: Emergence Day.

Set 14 years before the first Gears of War game, Gears of War E-Day will take us through the most important day in the series' history. With Marcus and Dom confirmed to star, we know this new PC game will be an emotional journey. Keep reading to learn more about this upcoming third-person shooter, including when it's set to launch.

The Gears of War E-Day release date is confirmed for 2026. This was shared by Xbox Wire after the Xbox Games Showcase. We expect it might come out in November 2026, to line up with the Gears of War anniversary.

So far, the only video we've seen for Gears of War E-Day is the official announcement trailer from the 2024 Xbox Games Showcase. The Coalition is known for its amazing work with Unreal Engine, and this in-engine trailer, made in Unreal Engine 5, truly shows off their skill – it looks incredible.

The trailer starts with a young Marcus Fenix being thrown through a wall by a Locust drone. The drone then steps on his arm as he tries to grab his Lancer. As a new version of 'Mad World' by Tears For Fears begins to play (the Gary Jules version was famously in the first Gears game's trailer), Marcus is clearly outmatched by the powerful enemy.

After hitting the drone with a TV set, Marcus slides across the floor and finally gets his weapon. We can see a bayonet attached, which suggests this is before the chainsaw-era Lancers. However, Marcus can't finish the drone, which lifts him easily, slams him into the ceiling, then into another wall. Luckily, Marcus's fighting smarts kick in: he jams the bayonet into a wall, hits the drone to make it flinch, and then blows its head off. It looks like the dark, gritty Gears style is back.

Before Marcus can recover, an Emergence Hole opens beneath him. He grabs onto a pipe to stop himself from falling. He can't hold on forever and starts to fall, but an arm reaches down and grabs him. As he's pulled up from the E-hole, with the 'Mad World' piano melody playing, the camera shows Dom. It was an emotional moment for everyone.

The trailer ends with the camera zooming out to show the sheer chaos and destruction in the city of Kalona, with huge E-Holes and many Corpsers. The Corpsers appearing here is another link between the E-Day trailer and the first Gears of War trailer (shown below), where Marcus fights one at the end. Whether planned or not, it's a nice touch.

Gears of War E-Day tells the story of what happened on Emergence Day. This was the day the Locust horde suddenly appeared from under the planet Sera, wiping out over a quarter of the human population in just 26 hours as they tried to take over the surface. The people of Sera had barely started recovering from the Pendulum Wars, a harsh 80-year fight over the planet's fuel, Imulsion, which had ended only six months prior. It was truly a terrible year.

As creative director Matt Searcy explained to Xbox Wire in a June 2024 interview, The Coalition chose to go back to E-Day because it's "the moment it all comes together. It's the heart of the Gears universe. Everything that happens is shaped by this day."

While fighting drones has usually been simple in Gears, both the trailer and lore show that even the weakest Locust were terrifying at first. In E-Day, Searcy says the "Locust are the 'monsters under the bed.'" He asks, "What would happen to the people of Sera in seeing this overwhelming army of monsters and trying to figure out… what are you going to do?"

Don't expect any happy moments during E-Day. The Locust quickly took over Sera's main cities, making it incredibly hard to organize any resistance. For more than a year after the invasion began, the Locust won battle after battle, gathering equipment as they conquered. That changed when Chairman Prescott ordered massive Hammer of Dawn strikes from orbit, hitting the Locust (and millions of civilians who couldn't reach the city of Jacinto).

While exact story details for the game haven't been confirmed, there's a lot of existing lore and in-game hints to guess from. We believe E-Day will start with the big battle in Kalona and end with the Hammer of Dawn strikes that slowly turned the tide, but at a horrible cost. If this is the case, we might see time jumps throughout the first year after E-Day, showing glimpses of humanity's fight for survival.
