Marvel Tokon Fighting Souls release date, closed beta, and more

What is the Marvel Tokon Fighting Souls release date? This game was arguably the biggest surprise of Sony's summer State of Play, with Arc System Works stunning the fighting game community. A new fighting game is on its way, aiming to become the top tag-team fighter.

This major collaboration brings together Arc System Works, Marvel Games, and PlayStation Studios to create Marvel Tokon Fighting Souls, a 4v4 tag-team fighting game starring Marvel's greatest superheroes. Before the Marvel Tokon Fighting Souls release date, let's look at what to expect from the gameplay, potential roster, and much more.

Marvel Tokon Fighting Souls release date

The Marvel Tokon Fighting Souls release date is planned for sometime in 2026 and will launch on PC and PlayStation 5. With a closed beta on the way, we believe there's a good chance the game will be ready before the Evolution Fighting Championship (Evo) tournament in Q2 2026.

Since 2021, Sony Interactive Entertainment has co-owned the Evo brand, so it will want this game to be a highlight event. This makes a launch before the tournament very likely. Evo usually takes place between July and August, though the exact dates for Evo 2026 haven't been officially announced. At Evo 2025, Arc System Works producer Takeshi Yamanaka confirmed the team plans to support the game for ten years.

We don't know how long the game has been in development, but it seems to be in good shape, judging by the gameplay we've seen. Marvel Tokon Fighting Souls is a PlayStation 5 console exclusive, meaning it won't be on Xbox Series X|S or Nintendo Switch 2. On PC, it will launch on both Steam and the Epic Games Store. The Steam page also confirms that the game will support crossplay between PC and PlayStation 5.

Marvel Tokon Fighting Souls closed beta

Players had the chance to try out Marvel Tokon Fighting Souls by joining the closed beta, which ran from September 5 - 7. This beta was only for PlayStation 5 and included rollback netcode, spectator mode, and limited offline matches. While the game has eight confirmed characters, only six were playable, with Spider-Man and Ghost Rider missing.

Sony's State of Play event on November 11 announced a second closed beta period from Friday, December 5, to Sunday, December 7. This beta is also exclusive to PlayStation 5, but this time Spider-Man and Ghost Rider are playable.

Marvel Tokon Fighting Souls gameplay

On July 31, the developers released a Beginner's Guide video explaining all the game's mechanics. Matches are played as best-of-five rounds, and teams share one health bar. Each match has phases, with the first phase limited to 2v2 until players start dealing damage.

You can add more fighters during the match by performing a special throw or using specific attacks to trigger a stage transition. Any fighters you unlock during a match stay with you in later rounds. The final phase of the fight happens when both players have their entire team unlocked.

At the top of the screen is the Assemble Gauge, which shows how many assists you have left. There's also a Skill Gauge at the bottom, needed to use your skill attacks. EX Skills cost 25 Skill Gauge and can be done quickly using the Quick Skill button. However, if you perform the skill using the command input, it will do slightly more damage. Super Skills cost 50 Skill Gauge, and Ultimate Skills cost 100.

Players can use Link Attacks, which are a series of attacks performed by pressing light, medium, or heavy attack buttons one after another. These combos can change if you end them with certain buttons, leading to a different final attack. For example, you can start a light Link Attack chain but end it with a heavy attack to finish your combo with an Ultimate Skill.

In the Marvel Tokon Fighting Souls behind-the-scenes video, the developers from Arc discussed how Marvel fighting games already have a rich history, which meant they needed to do something different. The team decided on a 4v4 fighter, expanding on the usual tag-team format by adding an extra character. This means things can get chaotic during fights, with up to eight characters on screen depending on how players use their assists.

This might sound daunting at first; learning to play as four unique characters is a lot to ask from most players. Fortunately, there's a lot of flexibility in how you use your team. You can use one main character and have the rest of your team provide assist attacks, or you can tag in each fighter as needed, giving you an edge in specific matchups.

It's unclear how this will be balanced, as players who take the time to learn all four characters might have a strong advantage. While there shouldn't be too many bad matchups thanks to all the assists available, your chances will improve by switching to a fighter better suited to take down the opponent. This could be balanced by giving teams with locked assists a stronger main character with more health and increased damage, but we'll have to see how the developers handle this later on.

Similar to Dragon Ball FighterZ and Guilty Gear Strive, Marvel Tokon Fighting Souls will have both traditional and simplified inputs, so players of all skill levels can jump into the action right away. We also know that each character has "a bespoke set of normal, special, and unique attacks inspired by their abilities and powers in Marvel lore," as mentioned on the PlayStation blog. Some iconic moves from past Marvel fighting games have made their way into this fighter, including Iron Man's Unibeam.

Looking at the gameplay we've seen so far, many mechanics are familiar from other fighting games. Aerial combat will be a big part of Marvel Tokon, with each character having a launcher to send opponents flying. We've also seen air dashes, active tags to switch fighters, and assists to create openings during combat.

Marvel Tokon Fighting Souls characters

Since this is a 4v4 fighting game, we expect many Marvel Tokon Fighting Souls characters to be on the final roster. Given Marvel's huge library of comics, Arc could pick from hundreds of fighters.

Here are all the Marvel Tokon Fighting Souls characters revealed so far:

Captain America
Iron Man
Spider-Man
Storm
Ms. Marvel
Ghost Rider
Dr. Doom
Star-Lord

According to Takeshi Yamanaka, producer at Arc, Marvel initially rejected the team's first character designs, asking them to "Show us the Marvel that you [Arc] want to create." Arc then redesigned the characters to give them a unique look, with Iron Man's Gundam-like makeover being the best example.

Yamanaka stated the developers have specific rules for which characters could be in the game. "First and foremost, we wanted to include characters who we feel to be the 'face' of Marvel," Yamanaka said. "At the same time, we also needed to select characters that would give us a balance of battle types and styles. Lastly, we wanted to sprinkle in a few surprises and leave room for characters who have never been playable in a fighting game before."

Considering who the current faces of the Marvel Cinematic Universe are, like the Avengers, Thunderbolts, and Fantastic Four, we will surely see characters from these franchises become playable fighters in the game.

Marvel Tokon Fighting Souls stages

The stage transition mechanic from Guilty Gear Strive is coming to Marvel Tokon. Gameplay showed Spider-Man kicking Ms. Marvel into a different part of the stage. Of all the backgrounds we've seen, they seem to be part of one big level: Marvel's version of New York City.

There are many easter eggs in the Marvel Tokon Fighting Souls stages we've seen so far, some of which might hint at who else could join the roster. In the main part of the New York stage, we can see the Avengers Tower in the background, along with a billboard featuring J. Jonah Jameson. Next to Avengers Tower is the Baxter Building, home to the Fantastic Four.

The backdrop on the right side of the stage shows a statue of the Avengers, including Iron Man, Captain America, and Thor. On the left, we see a side street taken over by what looks like Shuma-Gorath's giant tentacles, with armored soldiers in the background. We can also spot Fogwell's Gym, which might suggest Daredevil could be in the game.

The trailer revealed at Sony's November State of Play event showed three new stages, including the X-Mansion, which has several easter eggs to find. Most notably, many X-Men are in the background, but two iconic Marvel characters, Wolverine and Magneto, seem to be missing. Of course, this doesn't confirm anything, but we'd like to think this means they could be coming.
