To help bridge the gap until the next main installment in the horror franchise (Resident Evil Requiem), Capcom has quietly released a new strategic spinoff: Resident Evil Survival Unit. The game, which features iconic characters and a strong focus on base management, is now available on iOS and Android platforms, but its free-to-play mobile nature comes with some major caveats regarding monetization.
Resident Evil Survival Unit shifts the franchise’s focus from survival horror to a real-time strategy format. Utilizing the popular "parallel universe" trope to avoid narrative conflicts, the game brings together a powerful roster of fan-favorite characters, including Leon Kennedy, Claire Redfield, Jill Valentine, and Ada Wong.
The game is centered around tactical, real-time action in both single-player and multiplayer modes. While not as complex as dedicated RTS titles, players must assemble and upgrade a powerful team to navigate various "puzzle-based survival challenges."
Perhaps the most engaging feature for long-time fans is the ability to explore and upgrade a home base styled after the iconic Spencer Mansion. Players can improve various outbuildings—such as the Research Lab, Helipad, and Barracks—to provide crucial buffs and benefits to their characters and team.
The primary draw of Survival Unit is its accessibility, being a free-to-play title on mobile. However, this structure introduces elements that may deter some users:
Time-Gated Progression: The usual mobile mechanic of time-gated progress is present, encouraging players to speed up development with purchases.
Paid Characters: While many fan-favorite characters can be unlocked for free through standard gameplay, some characters require a direct purchase. The developer opted for direct purchases rather than "gacha mechanics," but the presence of paid characters remains a potential point of contention.
Despite the microtransactions, the game is fully playable without spending money, offering a free, experimental taste of the Resident Evil universe to occupy fans until the release of the next major console entry.
