Valve has revealed its pricing strategy for the newly announced Steam Machine, stating that the upcoming console-like PC will offer a "good deal" when compared to a self-built machine of equivalent performance.
Unlike traditional platform holders who often sell hardware at a loss to grow their ecosystem, Griffais affirmed that subsidizing the Steam Machine's cost is not part of Valve’s plan.
The value proposition for the Steam Machine lies in its unique engineering, which is difficult for consumers to replicate at home:
"You have features that are actually really hard to build if you’re making your own gaming PC from parts. Things like the small form factor and I think the noise level that we achieved or lack thereof is really impressive and we’re excited that the people are going to find out how quiet this thing is."
The Steam Machine was unveiled earlier in November alongside the Steam Frame VR headset and an updated Steam Controller gamepad.
OS: Runs the Linux-based SteamOS (the same operating system used on the Steam Deck).
Power: It is six times more powerful than the Steam Deck handheld.
Launch: The hardware is set to launch sometime in 2026.
