The Witcher Remake Release Date Estimated for 2028 or Later, Will Be Fully Open World

The highly anticipated remake of the original PC RPG, The Witcher, is still several years away, with the earliest estimated release date placed around 2028. Developer CD Projekt Red (CDPR) has confirmed that the remake will launch after The Witcher 4, a key factor in its extended timeline.

The project is being developed "from the ground up in Unreal Engine 5" by Polish studio Fool's Theory, which includes several veterans who worked on the original Witcher series. CDPR will provide "full creative supervision," but has asked for patience, noting the game is in the early stages of development and will not be rushed.

Major Changes: Open World and Modernization

The remake will represent a significant departure from the original 2007 game (which used BioWare’s Aurora Engine and featured segmented open zones):

New Design: CDPR confirmed during a quarterly earnings call that the remake will be a fully open-world game, aligning its structure more closely with the critically acclaimed The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.

Modernization: Fool's Theory has indicated that they will remove "simply bad, outdated, or unnecessarily convoluted" parts of the original game, suggesting it will not be a one-to-one recreation but a modern reimagining, similar in approach to the Final Fantasy VII Remake.

Release Timeline and Story Context

CD Projekt Red's official policy confirms the remake will follow The Witcher 4 (codenamed Polaris). The sequencing is deliberate, as the remake will be based on the core technologies and tools developed for The Witcher 4 in Unreal Engine 5. Given that The Witcher 4 is currently estimated to launch no earlier than 2027, the 2028 estimate for the remake is considered optimistic.

The story remains based on Geralt of Rivia's adventure following the novels, where he awakens at Kaer Morhen with amnesia and sets out to recover crucial witcher mutagens. The game's narrative directly precedes the events of The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings.
