The Legend of Zelda Movie: Following in Lord of the Rings' Footsteps?

The live-action Legend of Zelda film is moving ahead, with production reportedly starting.

A listing on the Film & Television Industry Alliance website says filming for the Nintendo adaptation began November 4th, 2025, and will continue until April next year.

If accurate, we might get casting news soon, helping us guess which Zelda game is being adapted. Sidon appearing would suggest Breath of the Wild, for example. We might also see a teaser for the series' 40th anniversary next year.

The website says filming is in Wellington, New Zealand, a popular spot for movies like Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings. Kaitoke Regional Park in Wellington became Rivendell in those films. Wētā Workshop is also based there.

The Legend of Zelda film summary reads: "A live-action adaptation of the video game franchise. 'The Legend of Zelda' follows Link, a young warrior destined to protect the magical kingdom of Hyrule from the forces of darkness. The land is under threat from Ganon, a ruthless warlord who seeks the Triforce - an ancient relic said to grant limitless power. To stop him, Link must embark on a perilous journey, battling monstrous creatures, exploring treacherous dungeons, and solving intricate puzzles to uncover sacred artifacts that can aid him in his quest."

Earlier this year, Benjamin Evan Ainsworth and Bo Bragason were announced as Link and Princess Zelda, respectively. The film is currently planned for release in 2027.

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment is now available on Switch 2. It's a Legend of Zelda crossover with Koei Tecmo's Warriors franchise, set before the events of Tears of the Kingdom.
